The first useful session in the ISPF editor is small. Open a member from option 2, move with the keys you already have, change a line with a line command or with CHANGE, and leave with END or CANCEL on purpose. Edit mode writes back to the member. If you only need to read, use View so a stray key cannot update production source.
A name without quotes is prefixed with your TSO prefix. A fully qualified name is in quotes: 'PAYROLL.SOURCE(PAY010)'. The wrong form looks for a data set that does not exist.
Type these over the line number. Press Enter to run them.
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| I | Insert a line after this one |
| D | Delete this line. D3 deletes three |
| R | Repeat this line |
| C / M | Copy or move. Put A or B on the destination line |
| CC / DD | Block copy or block delete. Type the command on the first and last line |
Command ===> is for primary commands. FIND and CHANGE apply to the member you have open.

PF3 is END on a default keyboard. If the member changed, END saves it. CANCEL is the way out when the edit was a mistake. Look at the data set name on the way in so END is not writing to the wrong library.
Option 2 opens the notebook on a page you name. The numbers on the left are handles: I adds a page line, D throws one away. The long line at the top is where you ask the notebook to find a word. END puts the notebook back on the shelf. CANCEL puts it back the way it was when you opened it.
Open a test member with option 2. Insert a line with I and delete it with D.
FIND a string you can see, then CHANGE it once. Decide whether END or CANCEL is the right exit before you leave.
Open the same member in View and confirm you cannot type I on a line number.
