Policy admin systems keep the book of business. Easytrieve is the batch step that turns last night's extract into a register a product manager can sign: written premium, earned premium, incurred loss, and a list of policies that failed a check. The numbers have to match the trailer on the extract. A wrong decimal position on premium is a restatement, not a formatting nit.
The upstream system writes one sequential record per policy or per claim. Easytrieve does not re-rate the policy. It formats what the extract already calculated, groups it, and flags rows that cannot be trusted.
| File | What it holds |
|---|---|
| POLICY or CLAIMS | Extract: policy number, line of business, premium, loss, status |
| COVTABLE | Coverage or cause-of-loss codes and descriptions |
| EXCEPTION | Rows that fail validation, with a reason code |
| SYSPRINT / report DD | The register and its control totals |
Match decimal positions to the COBOL copybook that built the file. Premium stored as packed 9 digits with 2 decimals is a packed field with 2 decimal positions in Easytrieve, or the loss ratio is off by a factor of 100.

SEQUENCE LOB-CODE groups the book. CONTROL LOB-CODE prints subtotals when the line changes. SUM names the money fields. Status I can mean in-force; print those on the register and send anything else to the exception file so cancelled policies do not sit in the signed premium.

DD names match the FILE names. The compile-and-go step uses EZTPA00. Mask account numbers and claimant names on the test copy of POLICY before anyone outside the insurance team sees the file.

The insurance computer writes a long list of who paid and who claimed. Easytrieve sorts that list by type of insurance, adds the money for each type, and writes a notebook. If a code on the list is nonsense, that row goes on a problem page instead of into the notebook the manager signs.
