Easytrieve failures split into three piles. The compiler writes EZTC messages into SYSPRINT and refuses a module. Warnings sit in the same listing and may still produce one. Runtime failures happen after RC 0 on the compile: a missing DD, a bad load library, or an SQLCODE. Read the first severe line. The messages under it are often echoes.
| Pile | What you see | Open |
|---|---|---|
| Compile error | EZTC…E and a $ in the listing, RC 12 | Compiler errors |
| Warning | + in the listing, compile may still finish | Compiler warnings |
| Runtime | Compile was clean; open, abend, or SQLCODE follows | Runtime errors |
The teacher marks the homework in red before you get a gold star. Those red marks are compile errors. A gold star and then a missing box of crayons is a runtime problem. Fix the first red mark. The other red marks are often the teacher still talking about that same line.
