Site Reliability Engineer (Mainframe)
Job Description
Job Description
We are FIS. Our technology powers the world’s economy and our teams bring innovation to life. We champion diversity to deliver the best products and solutions for our colleagues, clients and communities. If you’re ready to start learning, growing and making an impact with a career in fintech, we’d like to know: Are you FIS?
About the Role and Team:
In this role, you will work directly under the mentorship of Lead DevOps/SRE Engineers to help transition our legacy Release Management practices into a state-of-the-art automated pipeline. You will gain hands-on experience with both Mainframe (Cobol, RPG) and server-based (Java, .NET) environments, playing a vital role in our journey toward application containerization and automated delivery.
This is a unique opportunity to learn "Hybrid DevOps." While many roles focus solely on the cloud, you will become a rare specialist capable of managing the intersection of high-scale mainframe systems and modern containerized microservices. You will be mentored by industry veterans and given a clear roadmap for career progression into a SRE/DevOps Engineer role. This role is with our Horizon team.
What you will be doing:
Pipeline Support: Assist in building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines for a diverse environment including IBM iSeries/Mainframe and modern server-based initiatives.
Tool Integration: Help integrate mainframe workflows with modern DevOps toolchains such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, and Azure DevOps.
Workflow Standardization: Support the consolidation of source control tools (moving from Rocket Aldon/Bitbucket toward GitHub) and assist in documenting these new standards.
Automation Execution: Execute and troubleshoot automated build and release scripts.
Monitoring: Monitor pipeline performance and reliability, reporting bottlenecks or failures to the senior team.
Documentation: Maintain clear documentation for CI/CD solution designs, support requirements, and "Steady State" operating procedures.
Continuous Learning: Actively participate in training sessions and track your skill development progress as part of the DevOps transformation initiative.
Requirements & Skills
What you will need:
Foundational Knowledge: Basic understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and CI/CD concepts.
Scripting Skills: Familiarity with at least one scripting language (e.g., Python, Bash, or PowerShell).
Version Control: Basic proficiency with Git (branching, merging, pulling).
Problem-Solving: A strong desire to troubleshoot complex technical issues and a hunger to maintain and grow existing skills.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent job experience.
Added bonus if you have:
Experience in a technical support or junior development role.
Mainframe Exposure: Any exposure to mainframe environments (AS/400, z/OS) or a willingness to learn legacy systems.
Tool Awareness: Familiarity with tools like Jira, ServiceNow, Jenkins, or Docker.
Testing Basics: Understanding of automated testing frameworks (e.g., NUnit, Watir).
