Submitted a job, it said held or something. Where do I actually read the compiler messages?

SDSF, then ST (status) or H (held) depending on site. Prefix with your userid if you see everyone's jobs. Select the job with ? or S, then open JESYSMSG / SYSPRINT / SYSOUT.

Compiler messages are usually in SYSPRINT for the compile step.

If you see RC=12 on the compile step, start with SYSPRINT. Do not stare at JESJCL first.
