Glue. ISPF edit macros, quick dataset reports, wrapping utilities, automation that would be miserable in JCL alone.
Not what you write the core banking posting engine in. Super handy around the edges.

If you learn ALLOC, EXECIO, and LISTDSI you can already save yourself hours.
