Our shop has both. Is IMS just the old DB2? Trying to understand why both exist before training starts.

Not the same. DB2 is relational (tables, SQL). IMS DB is hierarchical (segments, DL/I calls like GU/GN). Lots of banks still run heavy IMS because it is fast for their access patterns.
You use whatever the application was built on. Not a free choice most days.
