Started a bootcamp last week. People say "the mainframe" like it is one computer in a basement.
Is z/OS the mainframe? Is IBM Z the hardware? Am I talking to one machine or a whole farm? Trying to get the vocabulary straight.
Hardware family is IBM Z (the box / LPARs). z/OS is the operating system you probably log into. "The mainframe" in conversation usually means that whole world: the OS, the batch jobs, CICS, DB2, all of it.
One physical machine can host many LPARs. You are almost never talking to bare metal directly.
I drew it as: IBM Z box → LPARs → z/OS → your TSO session / CICS region / batch jobs. Helped a lot.
