Moved from helpdesk into a mainframe ops shadow role. Everyone assumes I know SDSF and how jobs chain together. I do not.

If you could force a newcomer through 5 hands-on drills before letting them touch prod, what would they be?

1) Find a job in SDSF and read JESYSMSG without panicking
2) Restart a failed step the correct way for that job
3) LISTCAT a GDG and explain (0) vs (+1)
4) Cancel a test job
5) Who to call when DB2 vs CICS vs batch is on fire

Syntax can wait. Judgment first.

Add: read a COND/IF chain and predict which steps run after an abend. That one question filters a lot in interviews too.

And pair on one real overnight ticket end to end. Docs do not teach the smell of a bad rerun.
