Simple SORT. ABEND U0016. Control cards looked fine. JCL had //SORTIN01 and //SORTOUT.
Someone said the default DD is SORTIN. Is that really it?

Yes. Default input DD is SORTIN, output SORTOUT. SORTIN01 is for multi-input / certain merge setups, not a typo-friendly alias for SORTIN.
Rename to SORTIN. Also leave column 1 blank on SORT control cards.

SORTIN fixed it. Column 1 had a letter on one card too. Both wrong.
